It seems inevitable that one of the two of the future superstars of our sport will be on show at Kilkenny on Friday night with the Champion Open Unraced Stake getting underway. There are seven opening round heats in all and the entry is nothing short of sensational.

Each and every heat features a number of extremely well-bred youngsters, while some of the qualifying trial form jumps off the page. It also seems almost every big trainer in the land is represented and the resulting action should be unmissable.

Clearly this year’s hugely impressive winner’s purse of €15,000 has attracted the type of entry those involved in Kilkenny could only dream of. No doubt there will be plenty of potential buyers keeping a keen eye on Friday’s action, while those making the journey to view the opening round should certainly bring a notebook.

Of course, there will be a number of standout winners in the opening round but a few of those in behind are also likely to go onto big things.
